Free shipping over fifty dollars is quietly eating the margin I thought I had
I set the free shipping threshold at fifty dollars because every store I admire has one and mine felt naked without it. Four months later I sat down with the actual orders on a Sunday and most of them land between fifty-two and fifty-six dollars. People are adding the cheapest thing in the cart to clear the bar, which means I'm shipping heavier boxes to hit a threshold that was supposed to raise my order value.
Two other things I didn't plan for:
- a serum bottle arrived leaking last week, so I refunded and reshipped and that order cost me twice
- I'm packing everything myself in the spare room, about nine hours a week I don't have
I got a quote from a fulfillment warehouse and the per-order number looked fine until I added storage and the receiving fee, at which point it looked like a bet on volume I don't have yet.
Has anyone raised their threshold after the fact and survived it? And for those of you who moved to a third party, what was the actual trigger, the order count or the hours?
